Does humming really stimulate the vagus nerve?

Probably, in part — but not for the reason most wellness posts give. The vibration story is plausible and unproven. The slow exhale that humming forces on you is where the better evidence sits.

The short answer

Humming reliably shifts the body toward the calmer, parasympathetic side of the nervous system, and the vagus nerve is the main carrier of that shift. Small studies show increases in heart rate variability — the standard stand-in for vagal activity — during or after humming practices. So in the everyday sense of the question, yes.

What nobody has shown is that the vibration of humming is the active ingredient. Humming automatically slows and lengthens your exhale, and a slow, long exhale is one of the best-supported ways to raise vagal activity on its own. The most honest summary is that humming works at least as well as slow breathing, is easier for many people to do, and may add something extra that has not yet been measured.

You cannot hum quickly. That single fact probably explains most of what humming does for the nervous system.

Why the idea makes sense

The vagus nerve is the tenth cranial nerve. On its way from the brainstem to the heart, lungs and gut, it sends branches to the throat. Its pharyngeal branch and the superior and recurrent laryngeal nerves supply most of the muscles of the pharynx and larynx — the machinery you use to make sound. Another small branch supplies part of the outer ear.

So humming, singing and chanting all involve structures that the vagus nerve innervates, and the vibration of a hum is felt through the throat, face and ears. It is a reasonable hypothesis that this activity sends some signal back along vagal pathways. Many contemplative traditions arrived at chanting independently, which is at least suggestive that people noticed something.

What the studies show

The research on humming is small, short and mostly pilot work. It points consistently in one direction, which is worth something.

Bhramari breathing and heart rate variability

Bhramari pranayama, or “humming bee breath,” is a yogic practice of humming on a slow exhale, often with the ears gently closed. In one pilot study of 20 healthy volunteers, five minutes of Bhramari was followed by a significant shift in HRV toward parasympathetic activity and a drop in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Interestingly, during the practice itself the balance moved the other way before reversing afterward.

Humming versus slow-paced breathing

A 2025 pilot study compared humming breathing with slow-paced breathing (five seconds in, five seconds out) in 16 healthy adults. Both increased several HRV measures compared with rest, and both improved relaxation. The humming condition performed comparably to paced breathing, and the authors concluded it was a viable alternative that needs no app or pacing device.

That result cuts both ways. It supports humming as effective. It also suggests humming is not dramatically more effective than slow breathing alone — which is what you would expect if the slow exhale is doing most of the work.

Chanting and the brain

A frequently cited 2011 functional MRI pilot study found that chanting “Om” was associated with deactivation in limbic brain regions compared with a control sound. The authors proposed that vibration sensed around the ears might stimulate the auricular branch of the vagus nerve. It was a small study, and the vagal explanation was a hypothesis rather than something the scan measured.

The nitric oxide finding

You will often read that humming raises nitric oxide fifteen-fold. That comes from a 2002 study of ten people, which found nasal nitric oxide rose about fifteen times during humming compared with quiet exhalation, because the vibrating air improves exchange with the sinuses. It is a real and interesting result about sinus ventilation. It is not a measurement of vagus nerve activity, and it is often cited as if it were.

What is still unproven

  • That vibration is the mechanism. No study has cleanly separated the effect of the vibration from the effect of the slow exhale that comes with it.
  • That humming stimulates the nerve directly. The studies measure heart rate variability, blood pressure and mood. Those reflect vagal activity, but they are indirect.
  • Long-term effects. Most studies look at a single five-minute session. Whether daily humming changes resting vagal tone over months has not been tested properly.
  • Specific frequencies. Claims that a particular pitch in hertz is optimal for the vagus nerve are not supported by the research above.

None of this is a reason not to hum. It is cheap, pleasant, and harmless, and the measurable effects are real. It just belongs in the “promising, likely helpful, mechanism unsettled” category rather than the “proven vagus nerve hack” category.

How to hum for your nervous system

Five minutes, seated or lying down

  1. Settle. Sit comfortably with your back supported, or lie down. Let the jaw soften so the teeth are slightly apart behind closed lips.
  2. Inhale through the nose for about four seconds. Let the belly and lower ribs expand first.
  3. Hum on the exhale until the breath runs out on its own. Aim for eight seconds or longer, at a comfortable low pitch. Do not push the last of the air out.
  4. Feel for the vibration. Notice it in the lips, nose, cheeks and chest. Adjust pitch slightly until it feels strongest.
  5. Repeat for five minutes. That is roughly twenty-five to thirty breaths.
  6. Finish with a minute of quiet breathing. Notice what has changed — many people feel it most in the shoulders and jaw.

For the Bhramari variation, gently press the small flap of cartilage at the front of each ear closed with your index fingers while humming. The sound becomes much louder inside your head, and many people find it absorbs attention more completely.

Humming also fits into ordinary life in ways other breathing practices do not: in the car, in the shower, while walking, while washing dishes. Singing along to music works on the same principle.

Humming or slow breathing?

  • Choose humming if counting breaths makes you tense, your mind wanders during silent practice, or you want something you can do while driving or doing chores.

Humming is safe for almost everyone. If you feel lightheaded, shorten the exhale and breathe more normally for a minute.

Common questions

Does humming stimulate the vagus nerve?

Very likely, in part. The vagus nerve supplies the muscles of the throat used in humming, and small studies show humming practices increase heart rate variability, a marker of vagal activity. Much of the effect probably comes from the slow, long exhale humming requires.

How long should I hum to calm my nervous system?

Five minutes is the length used in most studies and is enough to feel a difference. Even a minute of slow humming on long exhales can take the edge off acute stress.

Is humming better than deep breathing for the vagus nerve?

Not clearly. A 2025 pilot study found humming breathing and slow-paced breathing produced comparable improvements in heart rate variability and relaxation. Humming may simply be easier to do well because it slows the exhale automatically.
